Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may sound like some new-age miracle cure that really does nothing. However, there are several actual benefits for hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Hyperbaric therapy is used to treat a variety of illnesses. There is hyperbaric oxygen therapy for wounds in general, as well as hyperbaric treatment for things like decompression sickness. Here is a brief look at how hyperbaric oxygen therapy can help to treat many different illnesses.

Hyperbaric chambers work by providing you with a much higher concentrate of oxygen. Hyperbaric pressure chambers aim to deliver 100 percent oxygen to your system, and they can be of rigid or flexible construction. Hyperbaric chambers traditionally consist of a hard shelled pressure vessel. It is not just the higher oxygen concentrate that helps to heal wounds and illnesses. The pressure used in hyperbaric oxygen therapy for wounds is used to force the oxygen into your body.

Forcing this oxygen into your system is vital if you have wounds that won’t heal. It is this direct compressive effect and increased availability of oxygen from which the therapeutic benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for wounds are derived. Your body’s tissue needs oxygen in order to function normally. If you have a wound, then your body needs even more oxygen. This is why hyperbaric oxygen therapy for wounds is especially effective. The hyperbaric oxygen therapy increases the amount of oxygen your blood can carry, thus temporarily restoring normal levels of blood gasses and tissue function.

But hyperbaric therapy can be used for more than just your normal tissue wounds. Anybody undergoing radiotherapy or radiosurgery is at risk of radiation necrosis. This is a focal structure lesion that usually appears at the original tumor site, and it can have potential long-term effects on the central nervous system. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be able to help heal these wounds by forcing more oxygen into the body.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may also be used to to treat many other illnesses and diseases, including AIDS, chronic fatigue syndrome, and Lyme disease. So hyperbaric oxygen therapy for wounds is not the only way to utilize this treatment. But if you are suffering from wounds that won’t heal or another type of illness that could benefit from increased oxygen levels, consider a hyperbaric oxygen treatment.

  1. Who is going to use this stuff? It just sounds like some magical thing that’s supposed to scam old people into using it to get rid of their aches and pains. I’ll wait for the scientific studies to come back before I consider this a cure for cancer.

  2. I have diabetes, so some of my wounds won’t heal. I received hyperbaric oxygen therapy and my wounds healed right up. It might seem a bit like voodoo, but it really helps some people.
