Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy Being Used to Treat Forms of Depression

Tms therapy for depression

There are numerous disorders that occur in a person’s life and cause them to experience various challenges on a day to day to basis. Though physical disorders can be very hard to deal with, some may find that mental and emotional disorders can be especially debilitating in many cases. Those who show the signs of depression and anxiety disorders may be particularly at risk for the potential of various daily hardships occurring. Though cases of depression and anxiety may sometimes be difficult to treat, innovative treatments such as transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy, or TMS therapy, are making effective treatment more achievable.

For many years, antidepressant medications have been the common solution for the treatment of those who show major signs of depression and anxiety. However, about 33 percent of patients who are treated with conventional antidepressant medications fail to achieve remission. Additionally, many of these people experience intolerable side effects such as nausea, weight gain, insomnia, and sexual dysfunction from the antidepressant medications they take. This is why transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy is often viewed as a more beneficial treatment option.

In 2008, the USFDA approved transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder, particularly in adults who have failed to improve with antidepressant medication due to seemingly having cases of treatment resistant depression. The procedure is non invasive and non systemic, and has been developed following extensive studies for the treatment of depression. The procedure of transcranial magnetic therapy treatment entails the placement of a coil on the scalp that generates a magnetic field which stimulates targeted neurons in the brain, which can help to alleviate symptoms of depression. With this innovative treatment, individuals may begin to see positive results in treating their depression disorders.
