Did you know that pottery, which is fired ceramic ware that is formed with clay, is both inorganic and nonmetallic? Although pottery has been in existence since 20,000 BC, it is still commonly made by artists and hobbyists today. Before beginning your pottery creation, however, it is important to obtain the necessary pottery tools and supplies beforehand. By acquiring the following supplies, you can efficiently enjoy the art of pottery making.
1. Clay. The first step is to obtain the specific clay you want to use for your design. Pottery is usually made out of either stoneware, earthenware, or porcelain. Depending on which material you choose, your piece will produce a different look. Earthenware, for example, is brightly colored when it is fired, while stoneware is mainly grey or brown when it is fired.
2. Pottery wheels. A pottery wheel is a convenient tool that allows you to quickly shape your clay. While pottery wheels do take time to master, they allow for flawless clay design when utilized correctly. If you choose to shape your clay by hand, however, a slip can be used. A slip is an aqueous suspension of water and clay body, and it is used to join hand-built parts to your vessel.
3. Kiln. Certain kilns, such as Olympic kilns, are used to harden your clay design. Olympic kilns are generally heated using either gas or electricity, and some kilns can even be heated with burning coal or wood. Olympic kilns are used to remove all the moisture out of the clay, and by doing so, the clay permanently hardens. It is important to be aware, though, that certain kilns, especially coal and wood kilns, can produce ash and smoke that will affect the look of your piece.
Pottery making can be an enjoyable experience, as pottery design ideas are endless. In order to make pottery, however, clay, a pottery wheel, and a kiln will all be needed to create your designs. By obtaining all the necessary materials, you can finally begin your artistic journey.
Pottery seems like so much fun! I remember doing in back in elementary school and I loved it, now time for me to get all the materials on my own, hehe! I just hope I still have the artistic skills I had when I was a kid!
